How to Test Outdoor Mosaic Materials: Freeze-Thaw Cycle
Mosaics can bring any outdoor space to life. But BEWARE: Not all materials can endure the freeze-thaw cycle. In this video, Kim and Bonnie demonstrate how to test various mosaic materials, including glass, ceramic, pottery, and dishes, for freeze-thaw exposure.

Hi I love your tutorials! I was wondering could I use this nipper with old thick broken glass bottles?
Good chance this tool will work but won’t know until you try. Thanks for being a fan!
Although the Seabell wheel tool would be my first choice because the jaw of the tool expands.
So pretty

These are beautiful! The AAC one warms my heart <3
Absolutely amazing 👏
Thank you! Cheers!

Sorry I do not understand your question, what do you mean grain?
What grain size would you recommend for this task?
Do you grind or sand every piece of stained glass before glueing it to the substrate? If not, isn't the pieces' edges sharp and cutting when applying grout?
I rarely grind my glass edges; you can bevel. the grout if the glass thickness is slightly different, but generally speaking, the grout covers the share edges. Good question. Thanks!
why do you use frosty instead of clear contact paper?
I think the Frosty is slightly less sticky so let’s go easier. just an option.
Well glue shows thru clear stained glass pieces. I spread it as thin as I could and i was told to use e61000 .
e60000 is an industrial adhesive, cures clearish - few adhesives cure 100%clear. You will almost always see the substrate. A trick is to use metallic tape on the back of your clear stained glass - creates kind of a mirror effect, but only ok for indoors. Then you can use WeldBond or other PVA glue. For the exterior, I use a white thin-set, which has 100% coverage between the glass and the substrate, and simply reads white.
Where can I buy these mosaics?
Noted in description, www.witsendmosaic.com. BEST mosaic supply store, terrific customer service.
I have a question for you: If I want to transfer a design I made with drawing software onto a mirror, would it be a good idea to print that design, cut it out, stick it onto the mirror, and then place the mosaic pieces onto the paper? Would that be safe, or is there a better way?
I would make a pattern that is cut out. There is a video dedicated to patterns and designs.
@@MakeitMosaics Thank you very much! I watched your video and it is great. It seems both of you are the real deal when it comes to creating mosaics! However, I am still looking for a way to transfer a design onto mirror glass. Any ideas?
If you are trying to put a pattern into a mirror cut out the pattern and draw onto mirror with grease pencil, I would consider face tape method or mesh method as alternative. You don’t want markings on the mirror surface that are difficult to remove.
@@MakeitMosaics I see, thank you very much again! Will try the cut out method although the pattern is quite is intricate. Anyway, you have a new subscriber :)
Great tips! Thank you so much!
You are so welcome!
Fabulous! These 2 videos were exactly what I needed!! Just to clarify, following these instructions, the pot can be planted in directly??
Yes you can plant directly in the pot. Have fun, great project. Note from Bonnie.
Thank You x a Zillion for this very helpful video, it’s much appreciated 🫶🏻🙏🏻💫
Glad it was helpful!
Love this ..Easy to follow instructions. Now ready to try.
Have fun!
Great video! I have large pieces of scrap marble. Some are 2 centimeters thick, others are 3 and 4 centimeters thick. All are pretty heavy 😅 Was wondering how to cut those in perfect little cubes like yours.
I think the video info is great, however I can't tolerate the music.
We have many folks who help with production, and I happily include their creative ideas, including their editorial video and audio choices. I appreciate your candid voice, I also must go to bat for the hard-working people making this channel available at no charge. This video has very little music. Thank you for watching.
Such great information! Thanks SO much!
You are so welcome!
I would not risk it because water always finds a way. But if you love the material, use it and move under cover during winter. Thanks foe being a fan.
So that's how you tell! Thank you! But let's say you're able to seal the porous edges of tesserae, such as a thick plate. Would that help protect it enough?
Awe love you gals!!!
What adhesive would be best for gluing tiny tesserae on a 3D outdoor mosaic? Tried silicone caulk for the eyes and it was very messy!
Depends on what surface is made of. If concrete, then thin-set mortar rated for your climate. If resin or plastic then silicone or Epoxy (messy and drips). For just. For small things, you might try Apoxie Sculpt. It is a 2-part clay, expensive but really a great product. I use for all sorts of things, watch this video, demonstrated ua-cam.com/video/r8rYgzR3F0k/v-deo.html
Best mesh video
Thanks for being a fan.
I love all your videos! This one inspired me to make the perfect gift for my daughter-in-law. Question… do you seal the grout on your flowerpots? Thank you for your excellent tutorials. I’ve learned so much from you. :-)
Thanks for being a fan. I rarely seal my grout; rather, I purchase grout with sealant and UV protectants already in it (Laticrete Permacolor, Mapei has a version.) Recommend you find a local tile store; they carry a much broader range of grouts. The sealant process is very labor intensive; I only do it for utilitarian projects such as a floor. You must wipe off the tiles, or they will be dulled by an annoying coat of sealant that, once dry, is challenging to remove. Most sealants, per the manufacturer, need to be repeated once a year or thereabouts. Not all of my colleagues agree with me. Last but not least, I put all of my pots under cover for the winter. Terracotta is a low-fire ceramic, and no matter what you do, after a couple of years, will degrade if exposed to freeze-thaw cycle.
Thanks for such a quick reply! Your comments are very helpful. 😀
How and where do you clean your tools up? How do you know how much to mix at a time? This is fascinating.
There is an entire playlist dedicated to working with thin-set: project examples, clean up, storage, etc. Here is link. Thanks for being a fan! ua-cam.com/play/PLz2kuKCUhTHbm9PInpxHTif4_PiFDEMzZ.html
Looks amazing! Where do you find your unglazed ceramic?
Cinca unglazed porcelain from Witsend Mosaic, link in description. Four of the Make it Mosaic kits are in this material, yummy.
Would I need to use mortar cement if I am putting my mosaics on a wooden table? I feel like I get yes and no from different people. Thank you in advance 😉
wood can only be used indoors, it will warp from moisture, if using wood you can use PVA glue (Weldbond etc) but table can not withstand wet or too much moisture as PVA glues are water soluble
When putting your tiles on AND when grouting, is the pot still damp from the prep of submerging it overnight?
Great question, no one has ever asked. yes damp is fine when applying tiles, I let thinset cure (dry) before grouting. Good luck. Thanks for being a fan.
Did you do anything to prep the porcelain before setting your tiles?
Nothing done to prepare porcelain other than remove some dirt.
Thank you
Nice work. !
Thanks! Keep creating!
Where do you buy these kits? Please, let me know.
Beautiful !!
Thank you! And thanks for being a fan.
Beautiful.. Thank you
Wonderful - thankyou!! I especially like your tips and tricks 😀

😂 I just bought this book 📕 yesterday from half price book store in our state doesn’t know you’re the writer ✍️ what is an honor to have your book
Thank you, I am honored and I hope you find the book helpful! Bonnie
Where can I buy individual high fired ceramic tile?
The tiles used in this video are these witsendmosaic.com/ceramic-porcelain/nova-glazed-porcelain.html
I’m so excited. I literally just opened my SeaBell nippers, and thought 😱 I don’t know how to use these! I’ve never owned glass nippers before (I’ll be using these mostly for glass). This was extremely helpful. 😊
And that's why we make these videos! Seeing is always helpful. Thanks for being a fan.
So happy I came across this video ! Your instructions were very clear and the results were beautiful ! I truly cannot wait to try this out 🥰🥰🤗. Thank you SOOOO much for your time and patience and for sharing with all of us.
You are so welcome!
Hi , a question for you - I am planning to make a 12in * 12in * 24in indoor decorative planter pot. I have some leftover thinset mortar (mapie keraflex SG) from other projects. So I am thinking to use thinset mortar to make the planter pot. Do you think thinset mortar will be strong enough to not crack if I use it ? Usuall cement is stronger than thinset mortar but from construction perspective. But if I just using it for decorative planters pot will it hold? Ps - I loved your work so much so that it got me thinking to try it myself. This is definitely going to be my next project 😊
You need some sort of armature to support the thin-set. Maybe a adaptation of a handmade substrate process, see videos on channel Make Your Own Substrates. Here is link to one of the videos: ua-cam.com/video/cKZzNzHZMpo/v-deo.html
Just reviewing this great video. I have a question using an example in your video and my own example. *At the end of the video you say Silvia Whiting mosaics directly onto the morter. The example shows what I think is a coloured piece of toughened glass with a small amount of light jade paint on the glass. If the morter is going to eat away the paint how long would you expect that to take for the mosaic to be compromised? *In a perfect would you should use a neutral cure adhesive, if you use painted glass on a cement ball, then attach with cement based adhesive how long would you expect before you see the cement based adhesives effect the paint. Would the glass eventually fall off or would the paint just discolour? Any idea on timeframe for this to occur?
I am pretty sure Sylvia did not paint her glass, but rather tinted the mortar (see the video in the channel about coloring grout and thin-set), maybe part was a pale green and the other white. Then again she was a pretty innovative thinker and I am not exactly sure. Sadly she passed away 2 years ago (I miss her!), so I can not ask. I know other artists who have applied the TG to painted surfaces, then used a silicone or some sort of clear adhesive so thin set does not eat away at the paint. So many variables, from paint quality to the exact mixture of thin sets, it is impossible to say how long until or if a failure will occur. Really not possible to give a definitive answer. Good luck!
@@MakeitMosaics Thankyou for the reply, I'm sorry you lost your friend ⚘ Thank you for all yor wonderful videos. 🧚♀️
Wonderful information and instructions. I learned so much! Can't wait to give it a try.
Have fun!
Awesome tutorial.....Thanks!!😁👍
Glad you liked it!
Dear lady, I will give you a piece of advice from my own experience. When you glue the pieces of porcelain, carefully coat their surface with flour glue (water, flour, honey) and when it dries, fearlessly cover the joints with the mortar you use. The mortar will not stick to the flour paste.
I’ve never heard of this. Interesting g suggestion..
